The Land of Tears

The older we get, the more people and pets leave our lives. For a time, we dwell in the land of tears. Little things seen and remembered can temporarily bring us to our knees. After my mother died, just the sight of her handwriting took my breath away. When Dad lived with us, I counted each day like a miser counting coins. When he took his last breath I was there to witness the peace that comes with death.

More times than I’d like to remember, I have brought a dearly-loved old cat to the vet for the last time. I have held them close in my arms, whispering words of love in their ears as they slowly go to peaceful, painless sleep.

We and all creatures are made to live a finite life. We don’t know when it will end, but there will be an ending. One of the things that makes life so precious is knowing this. The fact that we only have so much time here is a constant reminder to think, to rejoice, to shed tears, to find happiness, to give and receive love, and to cherish all things in our lives.

Just the other day, a dear friend let me know that her beloved dog had died. I wept for her loss. From a fellow blogger (whose writing and recipes I enjoy greatly), I found out that a dear friend of hers succumbed to cancer yesterday. She had written so beautifully about her friendship with him and his partner that I felt I knew them. I wept for her loss.

But tears are not bad things, but a testament that we are human and that we care. I went looking for some quotes about tears and found the following to be comforting. I hope that you do as well.

“I will not say, do not weep, for not all tears are an evil.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien

“But there was no need to be ashamed of tears. For tears bore witness that a man had the greatest of courage, the courage to suffer.”
– Victor Frankl

“Tears shed for another person are not a sign of weakness. They are a sign of a pure heart.”
– José N. Harris

“There is a sacredness in tears.”
– Washington Irving

“Tears are words that need to be written.”
– Paulo Coelho

“Let your tears come. Let them water your soul.”
– Eileen Mayhew

“It is such a secret place, the land of tears.”
– Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
