Preparing Rather Than Hoarding

The corona virus is a very unwelcome guest at this time, and most everyone on the planet knows this. Fortunately for us in America, we have the best and smartest people hard at work to come up with a way to send it packing and soon. In the meantime, we all know how to do all the “safety first” things, such as using hand wipes, sneezing and coughing on the inside of your elbow and wiping down surfaces andso on. Simply washing your hands is a big way to keep healthy, too. As has been said many times on television, if you think you may have the corona virus, call your doctor and tell her/him your symptoms.

In the meantime, it’s a good idea to stock up on things you’ll need should you have to stay in your home for an indefinite time. That said, there’s no reason to panic and grab up all the toilet paper, food and water so that no one else can have any. Another good idea is to make meals such tuna casserole, meat loaf and so on and freeze them.

Back when I lived in Texas, I became a Mormon (note: I am no longer a Mormon). One of many smart things the Mormons take to heart is to keep a good supply of food, water, and any necessities should there be a flood or some kind of disaster; like the corona virus. The idea is to use up things from your food storage; you won’t need to go to the grocery store as much (or at all). That way you can replace things so that you don’t end up with out-of-date stuff.

The Crankee Yankee and I have been doing this for years. We have lots of cans of beans, corn, condiments, pasta, cans of tuna, rice, soup, etc. downstairs as well as hand soap, bath soap, bleach, cans of cat food and so on. We have weathered storms where we lost power (fortunately we now have a generator), but we were always able to have food and water. We also have a big freezer downstairs full of food, frozen vegetables, fruit, and so on.

As has been said by people a whole lot smarter than I am, this virus will pass. There will come a time (and probably sooner than we think) that the virus will be defeated. When it does, we will always have a reminder from it to be prepared, not scared. It’s a great idea to have cans of food and boxes of pasta in your cupboards, and when you use them, buy more to replace them. Just doing this will lessen fears and worries.

I get that the corona virus is scary for right now. But believe it: we live in America and we have the smartest people on the planet who are hard at work to kick the corona virus’s ass. So as the Brits would say, keep calm and carry on.
